Interview With Keyboard Kid

Hello Keyboard Kid, So to start with.

How long have you been producing for? and where are you based?

I been producing music for about 23 years now which is crazy to say. I started making beats when I was still in highschool. But at the moment I’m Based in Bellevue,WA. East of Seattle.

How did you get into producing?

I got into producing honestly by always having a love for music I had some family members who rapped and an older cousin GoHardBlack from Dallas that had a studio and rapped and I would go over there as a kid and learn to work equipment. Shout out to GoHardBlack whose actually kin to E-40 as well. But when I turned 16 I downloaded a crack Fl on the home PC and that’s kinda when I really started making beats on my own.

We know you have worked with Lil B a lot, how did you get to know him and how did you end up producing for him?

I met Lil B on Myspace..Way Back In Like 07′ or something like that. I honestly just reached out to him. I was trying to get my beats heard at the time. I was familiar with The Pack and their music. I was just doing crazy stuff with the beats trying whatever you know my sound was different from a lot of stuff i heard as well around that time but B had that energy. He actually responded to a message i sent him and was like “yo send beats I’m tryna do my solo thing soon”. So I sent him a ton of beats cuz at that time all i did was make like 5-10 beats a day.

He was like these are crazy, keep sending and I started to get songs back and he would post songs on his myspace that ended up being some of my beats. Long story short he was like i want you to be my main producer for this Basedworld thing i’m doing and man he had did some touring in WA state and we would connect when he was in town I’d show him and The Pack around places or give em rides to the shows they had here, kick it with them. We have been friends ever since we like family. I’m also super cool with Jahlil Nzinga who used to go by Stunnaman/Keith. Shout out to bro he’s doing amazing things in the art world now. Shout out the whole Wolf Pack cuz they really showed me love when i was first getting into the music business.

I know that you produced the song I Hate Myself for Lil B how did you go about creating this beat?

The “I Hate Myself” beat was actually an idea B sent me. Every now and then He’ll be like “hey bro can u sample this song I love and just do your thing”. So he sent me the original song. And I just heard the words and that hit so deep.

I actually cried while making the beat. I kinda jus blanked out on it. Did some layering of different parts of the songs vocals. A top secret thing most don’t know is it’s a goo goo dolls cover that was done by Boyz 2 Men. They jus gave it more soul so I used that version. Thas a very rare based secret right there. But that beat was made specifically for Lil B by me per his request. I’m actually super good with taking an artist direction and then creating the canvas they ask for.

You also produced for Lil Wayne recently, how did that collab come about?

The Lil Wayne link up happened real organically, thru just years of working hard and I had met a producer Adams Awake from Atlanta who reached out to collab on beats with me and we just had a cool vibe going thru email, workin back n forth n kicked it out in ATL. We was just knocking out hella beats. Also the homie 14golds shout out to him as well. Adam was workin with Lil Wayne son Lil Novi shoutout to him. Motley Krew wats good.

Long story short We made some bangers for Novi and for his good friend Magic who is also signed to YMMK Young Money Motley Krew. Lil Wayne had been workin on Carter 6 and he heard the Mula Komin In Track and Loved it so him and Novi made history on that Father Son Track. Which I think is a beautiful moment for the culture. Need more moments like that in the culture. So being apart of that was a huge moment for me. Big Shout Out To Lil Wayne for that opportunity to be on the album. Would love to make more with him cuz I got so many more styles of beats.

What is the best cut for a producer, an upfront fee or points?

Honestly I’d say both get that upfront fee for your time, energy and work. Also get your back end too cuz that’s how the business works really. You never know what a song may do. It always better to have the business handled on the front end so you don’t have any trouble later. Lay all your terms out upfront and stick to em’. I want both.

When it comes to creating, how do you go about making your music?

I just vibe out. I don’t think I have a crazy process or anything maybe i do if someone seen me from the outside looking in on what i do. but for me it’s very no pressure. i just like to have fun and make what i like to make or what I want to hear. always making beats with Lil B in mind he’s my favorite artist i like to work with so there’s that. but I also just let whatever is flowin flow.

I keep it real based when it comes to my creation process. Life is my inspiration. My day to day is what fuels me.. my family..video games..movies and anime. nature. I try to not let too many outside influences dictate what imma create to me that’s where my magic happens. i don’t think about money and fame. I just think about what’s gonna make someone feel good or help them through their day. I want my music to heal and touch your soul in some way.

What do you think Ai will effect the industry going forward? how will it effect producers?

ehh such a hot topic right now..im so burnt out on talking about AI tbh. but i think it will be a tool like any other tool for some. it’s not gonna stop me from creating art in anyway and i don’t think it will stop any other true artist from creating art. the best art comes from living the human experience imo and no ai robot can do that.

What was your worst experience dealing with another producer if you have one?

Man lol not sure but i hate when people get greedy..I stay away from folks who wanna talk all the credit and are to me me me about things. like give credit where it’s due ya feel me. I don’t like that energy so anyone who’s really pushy I stay away from. or when people try to get close to me cuz they want something rather than just wanting to create art.

A lotta people just tryna be my friend cuz they want a favor from me or a Lil B feature. Most people I can feel the vibe off the interactions cuz i been doing this for a long time now. I really stay to myself for the most part. I been apart of the hottest thing going and I saw how folks switch up when they think your run is done. I don’t get as many people hittin me up. people I thought were friends and shit like that but that’s how the game go.

Any tips for young producers or people who just started?

Do what you feel. follow your intuition. you don’t need others for validation. validate yourself. focus on your fans and the people that love what you do, not the ones that don’t. handle your business, learn the business. Never stop. do it for the love and not for the money the money will follow.
