Interview With Squadda B

Hello Squadda B,
How long have you been producing for? and where are you based?

I started making my first beats in 2007 and started  recording on top of my beats a ton in 2008, so I’d count 2008 as the year I really started. 2009 was when most of the works started becoming available online. I’m based out of Oakland, CA with studios also in Detroit, MI.

Are you still using Reason or have you moved onto a different DAW?

I’ve fully moved away from Reason and onto FL studio. I first made the move in maybe 2010 and have not made a beat on Reason since maybe 2011. “I Will” on Danny Brown’s XXX is the last documented production I did on Reason.

How did you get into producing?

I first wanted to start making beats in 2004 because I was in a rap group and wanted us to have beats like Mannie Fresh and Three 6 Mafia. I eventually made my first one in school with my computer teacher in 2007 on Garage Band, then my cousin invested in Reason and let me use his copy and the rest is history.

We know you have worked with Danny Brown and produced for him, how did you get in contact with him?

Someone from his team reached out on Twitter in 2011 to work on music and I ended up sending him my own production for him to use rather than my group rap on his music.

I also know you have done some work with Lil B, how did you guys connect?

I was a fan of Lil B previous to him being a solo act so when my friend who is a friend of his brought him to my house I immediately started harassing him to work with me! It took a while but eventually we built a dope connection. I would have never guessed I’d be on his record label in this lifetime!

When Lil B came over, did you end up making any music? or have any interesting discussions?

I think the first time meeting Lil B was me in the back seat playing my newest songs on my beat with the driver in front of Lil B. I remember him asking if I made the beats and that’s when my harassing of him started. It took about 6 months to get him to rap on my stuff.

What is the best cut for a producer, an upfront fee or points?

Id say points for sure, up front fee is good but the long lasting money is best.

When it comes to creating, how do you go about making your music?

I generally think about my life and environments of today and yesterday until I get the inspiration to move forward. I usually have enough emotions from my crazy life to spill into the audio and make impact.

What do you think Ai will effect the industry going forward? how will it effect producers?

I think A.I is going to create the best music ever heard. I think the technologies created are going to open up new doors unheard of before. Imagine music before MPCs were made or SP1200’s. Now imagine the technology uncreated today that could change the face of music. I’m really excited for life.

What was your worst experience dealing with another producer if you have one?

My worst experience was a producer threatening to ruin my record deal by not allowing their music to be released by me after first giving me permission to use.

Any tips for young producers or people who just started?

I have a book soon to be released named “The Greatest Producer I Know” and I think all new producers should check that out to help open their mind up to the ins and outs of the creative process. Other than that, find a DAW and marry it. Go to sleep to it, wake up to it.

Awesome that you have a book in the works, any idea on a release date?

I should have the read-only version out in December and the audio book style coming with in February!

Any tracks you will be releasing soon?

I have so many tracks with Telephoneboxmusic soon to be released here on this blog! I have many albums releasing on Danny Brown’s record label and possibly more on Lil B’s record label as well!!!
