Interview with Sun Yehoshua

Interview with Producer Sun Yehoshua, we talk about Pewdiepie and Beyonce who recently discovered his music and more.

So you have been on quite the journey with your music, I know that pewdiepie picked up one of your albums, can you tell us the journey about that and how it happened?

– I still remember that day like it was yesterday lol. I was at work around 6-7am and I was checking my new emails. Out of them all, one was from Bandcamp. I looked at the name of who bought my album Karaoke Night, it and thought it looked familiar.. but no way it was who I thought it was (it was pewdiepies real name). So I checked my Twitter and saw he had followed me, too! At that point I KNEW it was him and immediately started freaking the f**k out.

Messaged him about a possible collaboration, and not too long after that, my song ‘Overseas’ was featured in one of this vlogs. He even credited me which was dope.

Definitely top 5 experiences I’ve had so far as a producer. Super thankful for that.

Recently, beyonces sister reposted one of your remixes? What was the story behind this?

– Maaan this happened out of the blue! So there’s a dope artist on Instagram named @langstonamadi who at the time, used my song ‘Up2U (a remix of The Internet – Hold On) in one of their creations. The art piece was a CRAZY video game edit of Solange being a DJ/Professor at Hogwarts. It goes Viral, Solange see’s it, Erykah Badu see’s it, and Syd (from The Internet) see’s it as well! They all reposted @langstonamadi and i’s collab to their Instagram stories. That was insane lol.

That is awesome, did you reach out to any of the artists which reposted your beat, such as The Internet?

Maaan honestly I didn’t, but i wish I did. I was so frozen i didnt know what to say 😦 lol but hey better late than never! *goes to send a message*

When it comes to creating, how do you go about making your music?

– Sometimes, I’ll wake up with a particular song stuck in my head. I’ll go listen to it a bunch of times and see if it meets my personal criteria for what’s “sampleable. If it does, I import it into RX8 -> fl studio, and get to chopping & laying down everything else.

Do you use fruity loops to chop the samples?

Yup! FL20, I believe.

What do you think Ai will effect the industry going forward?

– I think a big challenge with AI in spaces like this, is possibly taking opportunities away from real artists. Being an artist myself, I can see why this would be a worry. There’s even software (like suno, which I believe you told me about) that can make full blown songs.

And being a consumer, or maybe if I was someone with not much time, money, etc to work with a real artist.. I can see the argument FOR it as well. Also, If I’m not mistaken, Beanie Sigel has been shown to use AI to recreate his voice that he lost years ago due to unfortunate circumstances. It’s hard to say. Lol. There’s good use cases and there’s bad.

Yeah that is quite interesting, there are two sides to it. Also Kanye West who has apparently used ai to recreate his voice too, do you think rappers will just use ai to create beats and rap on them and cut out the producer completely?

I could see how some rappers would consider that route; and if that’s a tool they want to use then I think it’s fair game. With the introduction of AI, I’ve noticed there’s a very strong division between the two sides that are for it, and that are against it. I think the people who want real artist’s will continue to seek out real artists, and the one’s who want to use AI will use AI. There’s a crowd that’ll support both sides due to their beliefs. If people want to pay real artists and not support AI then that’s all they have to do lol. But to to fully answer your question, no, I don’t think so. Maybe I can see them doing it here and there but i don’t foresee it being a real issue.

Have you ever had an artist buy one of your beats and if so what was the process??

– Yessir! Selling beats isn’t quite as booming as it used to be, but the process was basically along the lines of offering leasing/exclusive rights for beats beat on my website. And posting that link everywhere/paying a little more to get it promoted.

what was your worst experience dealing with another producer if you have one?

– Worst experience was definitely when this producer/rapper was buying beats from me. Wanted me to teach him to make beats and all. Then suddenly said I never sent him anything when he claimed an audio file was wrong (there was nothing wrong).

He ended up putting in a chargeback with PayPal and my account was like -$300 lol. I had to send PayPal all of the conversation screenshots to get this back. It’s funny now, but back then?

yeah I feel like it is easier just to release your own music and not get involved in selling beats, I guess you dont do that anymore? Also any projects coming out soon?

Selling beats as a concept is too complicated man. I mean business-wise maybe not but I find I usually have some sort of connection with songs I make. So when an artist inquires, I’m usually more concerned about whether the final result vs the monetary aspect.

Yes! I haven’t quite decided on the title yet, but I’m planning on releasing another one In November, and then in December as well. A laptop I thought was destroyed randomly started working one day. Imagine my surprise lol. Lot’s of music to come soon.

I appreciate you as always, Nick! Take care
