Interview with Uptown Greg

Hello Uptown Greg

Hello yes my name is Uptown Greg and I am Lil B’s producer .

How long have you been producing for? and where are you based?

I have been producing since around 2012 and I am from and based in New Haven Connecticut

How did you get into producing?

I got into producing by always having a strong passion and love for music and began playing instruments early as a kid like guitar and drums. then eventually I fell  in love with hip hop and began to make beats.

What was the first hip hop tracks which sparked your interest in hip hop?

I would say the first track that sparked my interest in hip hop had to be “new York state of mind” by Nas. The thickness of the production and drums and how they sounded really stuck with me and I kept replaying that song as well as “the world is yours “ by Nas . Those two tracks inspired me early

You produced Lil bs most recent hit, Gucci Oj Waka Soulja Yachty. How did you make this record and how did it come about?

I made the GucciOJwakasouljayachty beat maybe in late 2022 actually. I wasnt thinking too much going into making the beat. I was just was going for something  minimal with some low brass so I laid down a  progression  and came up with that. The video for the song just came out but the song has been out since 2023 off the “bitch mob the album” tape.

When was the first time you met Lil b and how did you end up working with him?

I would say the first time I met Lil B maybe was in 2018 or 2019. I first began working with him over 10 years ago around 2013-2014 by sending him  production and having an instant musical connection.

What was the funniest moment working with Lil B?

As far as funniest moments we def take everything we do on a musical and art  side of things very serious, but as any friends / family there are always funny moments when we link and hang out.

You also produced a track with Lil b and chance the rapper in 2015. What was the process with that track? Did you get to talk to chance the rapper at all when working on it?

Yes I produced two tracks on that project “last dance” and “do my dance” that was very early production from me that tape is rare and historic. No, I did not get to speak with chance during the process or recording as I did not  know I was going to be on it. I believe it was something that just happened and things came together as family on my end for the production. I believe the process was just Lil B using my beats he had of mine for the project and them going in.

What is the best cut for a producer, an upfront fee or points?

For me, I try not to get caught up in money or monetary rewards as my true focus is building sound first. If I’m giving advice to others about this Id actually say the same thing — first focus on your sound and staying true to the music everything else will follow after.

When it comes to creating, how do you go about making your music?

When it comes to creating I’m always listening to music and being a fan of art and being of the culture. I get tons of inspiration from  listening and digging and having a love and respect for music. I always go with how I feel when I’m making beats and usually when I’m creating I’ll be inspired by something.

How do you think Ai will effect the industry going forward? how will it effect producers?

I think AI will have its benefits to producers as I try look at the positive side of things. Within the music industry itself I can’t actually say, but for producers and people who want to honestly create I feel it can do some pretty cool things . I would also say don’t rely on it and always create from the heart first.

Any tips for young producers or people who just started?

For younger producers try not to  get discouraged and pay attention to mental health and be kind to yourself and others. Work hard on your sound. Try to develop a sound that’s yours and don’t be afraid to dig deep into the culture and what came before you.

Any tracks you will be releasing soon?

Yes Lil B and I are working on new music right now and new music will be released soon
